PORTALS
by Kathi Hendrick, Cornelia Hodges, Benjamin Henretig
USA

PORTALS explores the body, nature, and heart as doorways into deeper dimensions of self and our inherent interrelatedness. Through movement, imagery, and original music, the film enters the liminal space between inner and outer worlds, where the body becomes a threshold into feeling, knowing, interbeing, and transformation.
PORTALS traces two journeys from disconnection toward reconnection, inviting viewers to question the boundaries of self and explore the possibility that we are not separate from one another, from nature, or from the larger web of life.
words from the filmmaker
I experience art as a way of enter the unknown. Art-making asks me let go of what I think I know and listen for what wants to emerge. My creative practice has been a way of finding my way back to the body, to nature, to feeling, and to forms of knowing that exist beyond the limits of language and the rational mind. PORTALS grew from a desire to explore what becomes possible when I allowed myself to experience my body not as separate from others or the world, but as a doorway into it.
I’m fascinated by the multidimensional nature of life; by the ways our inner worlds are continually reflecting and entangling with the worlds around us. Through movement, poetry, imagery, and sound, I wanted to create a space where I could explore what happens when the boundaries between them became more porous. Specifically, where the distinction between self and other, human and nature, inner and outer might begin to dissolve.
The film is also deeply connected to a question I feel is central in our time: how do we transform the ways we see, feel, and relate in order to create a thriving world for everyone? I believe art can help us cultivate the sensitivity, imagination, and aliveness needed for this kind of transformation. Art can interrupt the ideas and patterns that have become habitual and return us to a more immediate encounter with being alive.
PORTALS is my offering into that inquiry. It’s an attempt to make visible and felt something that is difficult to articulate: the possibility that beneath our experience of separation is a deeper field of connection, and that by becoming more intimately attuned to our own bodies, we might remember our belonging to something much larger than ourselves.
