Joy
by Rico Stein and Noah Toaso
Germany

In this short film, witness the duality unfold as Joy Womack moves between two worlds.
A visual metaphor for the uninhibited freedom that dance can provide with our act'pointes.
Imagine a space where each movement tells a story, where the lines between dream and reality blur.
Our act'pointes, the silent companions in this dance, navigate between both worlds, embodying the seamless fusion of tradition and innovation.
words from the filmmaker
The act'ble dance project was a unique experience for all of us. For the production team it was an exploration of dance. For our dancer it was an experimental performance.
As directors and directors of photography we wanted to showcase a breakout of the traditional way of ballet. We thought it would be interesting to capture a ballerina’s performance in an unorthodox environment.
In the film we cut between a traditional ballet studio and a rock quarry. A big challenge was to evoke an impression of Joy (the dancer) feeling free in this new environment while maintaining her way of ballet dancing.
why we love this film
Reminds us how ballet can transform and transport you, and that at the end of the day, dance should be performed for yourself and not for an audience.
