When returning to a childhood home, traditions reveal themselves like a cyclical nightmare. Rooms, objects, and people are stuck on repeat of a single moment in time, like a painting that's asleep in the past. Only as the dancers awaken from their ongoing nightmare do they reclaim their individuality and choose what past traditions they want to hold on to and which to let go of.
words from the filmmaker
Interested by the subconscious influence of family, I set out to understand the innate pressure and/or tendency to adopt and carry forth family traditions–despite how absurd they might be. For example, my family has a tradition of drinking tea after every meal of the day, even when so full of food or there being a heatwave outside. Without questioning, this tradition became ingrained within me to the point that I felt incomplete and even stressed if I didn’t have tea after a meal. My family tea time feels like a harmless tradition, but realizing that it affected my sense of self and even stress level had me question what other traditions am I asleep to?
why we love this film
Perfectly captures the feeling of going back to our childhood home. Old memories with new perspective.
