Visual allegory of societal restrictions on autonomy in South Korea against the outbreak of COVID.
words from the filmmaker
The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) spread from China, and almost immediately to South Korea, and then across the world, reducing social interactions and causing substantial psychological distress. The psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of uncertainty, the loss of autonomy associated with preventive measures, and secondary stressors due to extreme restrictions in South Korea spiked anxiety and depression in expats and locals. The film “By a Thread” is a visual allegory, as told through the language of dance, of my journey through the years of covid in South Korea. The stages of this journey included: isolation and frustration, viral spread and attack, trapped in a multitude of intense restrictions, anger and loss, fighting to break free (emotionally and psychologically), and the destruction of a life I no longer knew.

why we love this film
Incredible use of production design and symbolism. This was trippy, funny, surprising, and exhilarating the entire way through.
