Spinning Hug
by Omar Peréz Rosales
Spain
A dance film that explores the poetic and romantic union of two objects, such as the spinning top and the rope and how they give each other heat, warmness, and safety by intertwining themselves into a hug, which will help them to generate an endless spin similar to the one of the earth on its own axis.
words from the filmmaker
There is a poetic meaning and aesthetic between both objects, if you think about it - The rope, embraces the spinning top, winds it up, caresses it firmly, gives it heat, gives it strength and motor to start spinning, and at that moment it is thrown , falls, right, in the center of the world, rotating between minor and major notes, between primary, secondary, complementary colors.
And it's because both objects, by themselves, lack their own value (in a way), the rope needs the spinning top and the spininng top needs the rope, they complement each other, otherwise they would only be two deedless objects. They make that perpendicular rotation to the ground, in a vertical harmony or inclined some other times. But in the end everything is nothing but a kid's game, wishing the world would be spinning in the palm of their hand.
why we love this film
A poignant film about the absurdity of the human existence, and the miracle of being able to dance while rotating on the earth's surface at 800mph. Beautifully executed.
